Notes
A husband comes into a dark kitchen at night, where his wife sits with a bowl of cereal and a carton. Thinking she has found him out, he confesses that the ring he gave her is a cubic zirconia and that he once spent time in prison; she lifts the empty carton: “You drank the last of the milk.”
Made by: California Milk Processor Board (then the California Fluid Milk Processor Advisory Board); agency Goodby, Silverstein & Partners.
Got Milk? The Book (1999) numbers it Commercial #2 and says it debuted in October 1993 with “Aaron Burr” (pp. 4, 62). Manning calls it “Our most subtle spot. Still considered some of the best copywriting in the campaign”; as first edited it fizzled out, and Jeff Goodby found “about a second and a half of film” in the outtakes, the husband’s shrug and smile, that saved it (p. 48).
The production company’s upload is titled “Got Milk? Cubic Zirconia”; fan copies are titled “Did You Think…”, “Secrets” and “Got Milk? 1997”. The Bridge Brands complaint of 2014 lists the spot as “Couple”.
