Notes

A full-page colour ad: an elderly man in a blue cap lettered “FRED”, a striped shirt and denim overalls, with a milk mustache. In front of him are a glass mug of milk and a plate of cookies. The copy reads: “It’s hard work being a famous movie star. That’s why I make sure I always drink my milk. Drinking Vermont milk does more than build strong bones – it helps preserve Vermont’s family dairy farms. Believe me, if dairy farmers didn’t need help, I would never have run for the house.”

The sign-off is “VERMONT MILK Where’s your mustache?” with a service mark. The credit along the edge of the page reads “Fred Tuttle ©Vermont Department of Agriculture” and “Photo by Patricia”, followed by a surname that the edge of the scan cuts off.

Issued by: Vermont Department of Agriculture, as the credit line reads. A state piece, not one from the national campaign. It carries the national campaign’s line “Where’s your mustache?”, with “VERMONT MILK” in place of “MILK”.

The picture filed here as the “Fred Tuttle article parody” (1998) is a magazine photograph of this ad on a yard sign.
